FPT là cái tên rất quen thuộc trong làng công nghệ ở Việt Nam, được biết đến như là cánh chim đầu đàn, là doanh nghiệp tiên phong thúc đẩy sự phát triển của công nghệ thông tin tại Việt Nam. FPT là một trong 20 doanh nghiệp tư nhân lớn nhất Việt Nam hiện nay, với 3 lĩnh vực kinh doanh lớn nhất là Công nghệ, Viễn thông và Giáo dục.
FPT được thành lập bởi 13 thành viên vào năm 1988, thời điểm mà Việt Nam còn đang gặp rất nhiều khó khăn sau chiến tranh, và lĩnh vực công nghệ thì chưa được phát triển. Khởi điểm của FPT là một doanh nghiệp hoạt động trong lĩnh vực công nghệ chế biến thực phẩm. Năm 1990 công ty thay đổi chiến lược, định hướng trở thành doanh nghiệp hoạt động trong lĩnh vực công nghệ, chủ yếu là công nghệ thông tin.
Năm 1998, FPT trở thành 1 trong 4 nhà cung cấp dịch vụ Internet của Việt Nam. Năm 1999 công ty phần mềm FPT Software được thành lập. Đến nay FPT Software đã trở thành một công ty toàn cầu, có trụ sở hoạt động tại hơn 20 quốc gia trên thế giới với hơn 20 nghìn nhân viên hoạt động chủ yếu trong mảng phát triển phần mềm – là đơn vị cung cấp dịch vụ gia công phần mềm lớn nhất Việt Nam. FPT cũng được coi là cái nôi của nhân tài công nghệ, nhiều cựu nhân viên của FPT sau này đã tự có hướng phát triển riêng và rất thành công, đóng góp lớn cho sự phát triển chung của ngành CNTT nước nhà.
FPT cũng là một đơn vị có nhiều ảnh hưởng đến các chính sách phát triển công nghệ thông tin của quốc gia. FPT là đơn vị tiên phong trong việc thành lập và tổ chức hoạt động của VINASA – Hiệp hội Phần mềm và Dịch vụ Công nghệ Thông tin Việt Nam. Có thể coi VINASA là hiệp hội đại diện cho tiếng nói và quyền lợi của các doanh nghiệp CNTT của Việt Nam, là cầu nối giữa chính phủ và doanh nghiệp, đồng thời xúc tiến nhiều hoạt động kết nối hợp tác quốc tế.
Các đối tác và khách hàng của FPT ngày càng nhiều về số lượng và lớn về quy mô hợp tác. Có thể kể đến một số đối tác tiêu biểu như: IBM, Hitachi, Toshiba, Oracle, Microsoft, Airbus, Salesforce,… và không thể không kể đến các đối tác là chính phủ Việt Nam và chính phủ của một số nước khác trên thế giới.
Ngoài phát triển và cung cấp dịch vụ phần mềm, FPT cũng được biết đến là đơn vị đã tham gia sớm vào ngành đào tạo lập trình tại Việt Nam và hiện nay có rất nhiều đơn vị hoạt động trong mảng đào tạo lập trình.
Có thể nói, FPT là đàn anh của các doanh nghiệp CNTT Việt Nam, là cánh chim đầu đàn, dẫn dắt và thúc đẩy giấc mơ phần mềm Việt từ những ngày sơ khai.
